Ersta Diakoni increased efficiency and quality through automation - An interview with Adam Carstens Chief Medical Officer Ersta hospital
In the pursuit of reducing the administrative burden for the staff and increasing the medical quality follow-up, Ersta Diakoni has implemented Alfa eCare's automation robot.
Adam Carstens, senior physician at the medical clinic at Ersta Sjukhus talks about the effects in this article and our own Martin Mogensen talks from a supplier perspective. Adam gives us a closer insight into Ersta Diakoni's motives behind seeking an automation solution as well as their positive experiences and expectations of the implementation process.
Efficiency through Alfa eCare's automation robotAlfa eCare's automation robot has become a central part of healthcare's quest for improved efficiency and quality through the automation of IT tasks. Martin Mogensen, representative of Alfa eCare, gives us a brief insight into the purpose of the robot and its application within various businesses. "The automation robot is created to improve efficiency and quality through automation of IT tasks in the healthcare sector. It is widely used in hospitals and helps clinics with daily IT-related tasks.”
First deacon's quest for efficiency and quality improvementErsta hospital, part of Ersta diakonie, actively sought an automation solution to reduce administrative time and improve medical quality follow-up for patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Adam Carstens, chief physician and operations manager for the medical clinic, shares the organization's goals and expectations. "We wanted to reduce administrative time at the same time as we wanted to increase medical quality follow-up by simplifying a 'boring' process so that it is done to a greater extent."
Hopes, time gains and improved data quality
Ersta Sjukhus had clear hopes of freeing up time from healthcare-trained staff through automation to enable an increased focus on direct patient work and improved data quality. Adam explains: "With this, we wanted to be able to free up time that was spent by healthcare-trained staff entering data into quality registers so that this time could instead be spent on direct patient work."

Smooth implementation and positive effectsAdam describes the implementation process as smooth and positive with an agile* method that enabled a fast process. "It has been very smooth work to develop the automation for entering quality data in SWIBREG**. Both the development of the flow, implementation and start-up have been agile, in a positive spirit, and it has also been fun."
The future of automation at Ersta diakoniaErsta Sjukhus plans to further digitize the process by introducing web forms and is now looking forward to an evaluation of the data quality in the upcoming open comparison. "By introducing a web form, the patient's own description of symptoms and illness experience can be filled in digitally before the visit and entered directly into the medical record system. In this way, we eliminate the last piece of paper in the flow. Now, further automation of other administrative processes awaits," says Adam Carstens.
Cooperation and future lessons learnedMartin Mogensen reflects on the collaboration with Ersta Diakoni: "The project to introduce automation at Ersta was an example of how this type of project should be handled. A success factor was that Ersta had an implementation group, which enabled quick decisions and smooth implementation," says Martin.
Finally, by sharing its success journey with automation, Ersta Sjukhus provides valuable insight for other organizations and businesses that strive for efficiency and quality improvement in healthcare.
*Agile working method focuses on flexible development through iterative processes, customer involvement and rapid adaptations based on continuous feedback.
**SWIBREG is a national quality register with the aim of increasing knowledge about and improving the care of inflammatory bowel disease.

First diaconate
Ersta Diakoni is Sweden's largest idea-driven healthcare provider. Here science and heart go hand in hand. And here, the profit is reinvested in the businesses in full to be able to help more people. No weirdness really. It's just the way it should be.
